Family travel in Malaysia & Singapore: EXO’s insight and tips

A blend of natural wonders, cultural treasures and ease of travel that tick all the boxes for an unforgettable family holiday.

Often overshadowed by neighbouring Thailand or Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore offer surprising depth and diversity, perfect for families with a thirst for adventure and a desire to broaden young minds.

From the vibrant markets of Kuala Lumpur to orangutans swinging through Borneo’s rainforests, Langkawi’s quiet beaches to Singapore’s illuminated gardens, there is no shortage of memorable backdrops for a family holiday.

The countries’ efficient, reliable infrastructure means less time spent on long travel days and more time enjoying the destination. And, with two well-connected international airports in Singapore and Kuala Lumpur, getting to and from Malaysia and Singapore is easy.

From quick getaways to in-depth sojourns, Malaysia and Singapore have options for every type of family holiday. Based on the family’s interest, EXO can advise on the right pace, chose the perfect stops and match guests with the best accommodation, guides and experiences.

Keep reading for a closer look at what Malaysia and Singapore have to offer for family travel! And be sure to read to the end to check out EXO’s favourite family itineraries and experiences for inspiration.

Peninsular Malaysia

Malaysia is a cultural tapestry, offering families a rich tapestry of experiences that blend Malay, Chinese, Indian, and indigenous influences. This diversity is visible in the country’s architecture, traditions, and, most deliciously, its food.

EXO recommends families spend at least a week in peninsular Malaysia to cover Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Malacca. This slower pace allows time to discover the culture and heritage of these cities through fun, interactive excursions as well as visit ecotourism sites for a taste of Malaysia’s diverse wildlife.

Alternatively, families with older children may wish to travel overland from Kuala Lumpur to visit Taman Negara, the world’s oldest rainforest.  With treks, boat trips, canopy walks and night safaris, this jungle adventure is worth the journey for families who love nature.

An optional extension to the tropical beaches of Langkawi Island are the perfect addition to a family trip through Peninsular Malaysia.

Sabah, Borneo

The northern state of Sabah, on the island of Borneo, boasts unparalleled natural landscapes including idyllic beaches, lush rainforests and towering mountains. One week is recommended to explore Sabah’s national parks and wildlife reserves before heading to nearby Gaya Island for some beach time.

While in Sabah, EXO recommends a night or two in Sepilok. Home to conservation projects for orangutans and sun bears as well as the Rainforest Discovery Centre, a visit to Sepilok provides insight into wildlife preservation and a chance to see many endemic species.

Families seeking more adventure can delve into jungle expeditions along the banks of Kinabatangan River, the longest river in Sabah. Staying two to three nights provides opportunities to spot wildlife or enjoy hiking trails, perfect for those with older children craving a dose of adventure amidst nature.

A longer stay with an active focus on wildlife conservation can be arranged in Kinabatangan for those who are interested.

Singapore

As with Peninsular Malaysia, Singapore’s multicultural landscape offers an educational journey for both kids and adults, allowing them to immerse themselves in new cultures in an engaging and interactive way. From kid-friendly museums to awe-inspiring sites and food sampling adventures, there’s no room for boredom.

Singapore, though more urban than Malaysia, also provides its green spaces and nature reserves, offering families a breath of fresh air amidst the cityscape. Its well-maintained parks and gardens are perfect for letting the little ones run around.

Some family highlights include River Safari, Asia’s first and only river-themed wildlife park, and SEA Aquarium, one of the world’s largest aquariums. Singapore’s famed Gardens by the Bay is another great family-friendly attraction with its unique conservatories, indoor waterfall and Cloud Forest as well as the iconic SuperTrees.

EXO recommends that family’s combining Singapore with a beach stay on Indonesia’s Bintan Island. Located around 75 minutes by ferry from Singapore, the island boasts several great family-friendly resorts and spectacular beaches.

Getting there and around:

Singapore’s Changi Airport (SIN) and Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL) are two of the busiest hubs in Asia, with great international flights from Australia, Europe and the Americas.

Borneo’s Kota Kinabalu International Airport (BKI) has a fair number of regional international flights from hubs such as Bangkok and Saigon as well as Kuala Lumpur and Singapore. Sandakan (SDK) airport is another good option for families wishing to explore Borneo, with daily flights from Kuala Lumpur and Kota Kinabalu.

Domestic travel features a mix of road, flight and boat journeys– EXO’s travel consultants can advise on the best routes and options depending on family’s preference and schedule.

It is also worth noting the ease of access to neighbouring islands for beach breaks.

  • Bintan Island: less than 1.5 hours by ferry from Singapore
  • Gaya Island:  20-minute boat ride from Kota Kinabalu, Borneo.
  • Langkawi: multiple daily flights from Kuala Lumpur, Penang and even Singapore.

These are just a sample of the options available for Malaysia and Singapore family holidays.  EXO’s travel consultants can customise a trip to match travellers’ interests and budgets, for Malaysia and Singapore or any of our exciting destinations.
